Brahmastra is an upcoming movie trilogy that is directed by Ayan Mukerji under the Star Studios and Dharma Productions banner.
The film tells the story of Shiva, a DJ who not only has a strange affiliation with fire but also wields the power to awaken the Brahmastra – a supernatural weapon that could destroy the universe.
“This is the story of Shiva who sets out in search of love and self-discovery. During his journey, he has to face many evil forces that threaten our existence.” – Brahmastra, via IMDB.
As Shiva sets out on a journey in search of both love and self-discovery but must also face foes such as Junoon, the queen of darkness; who is also searching for the Brahmastra.
“In the mainstream world of entertainment, I really think that ‘Brahmastra’ is that step that takes us from India towards the West, where they can appreciate Indian culture and our inherent storytelling and still get enough bang for their buck.” – Ayan Mukerji, via Variety.
At the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit in 2020, whilst filming for the upcoming movie trilogy was ongoing, Chairman of Disney India Uday Shankar said that the budget for Brahmastra was in excess of Rs 300 Crore.
Shankar would then state how “it is the biggest ever movie made in this country” but then also add, when asked about the RS 300 Crore budget, that “it’s way more than that.”
“Any movie like that, the experience that it seeks to create, needs to straddle across everything. It cannot be denied that most intense experience that only a theatre can generate.” – Uday Shankar, via The Hindustan Times.
This has since been reaffirmed by reports in GQ India and Bollywood Hungama; however, DT Next reported in July 2022 that the budget was nearing the Rs 500 Crore mark – although this figure has yet to be officially commented on by the production team.
Assuming that the Rs 300 Crore figure is the minimum budget as reported, this would make Brahmastra the sixth most expensive film production in Indian cinema history:
Brahmastra is currently scheduled to release in theatres around the world on Friday, September 9th.
The movie was originally meant to premiere back in December 2016, before subsequent production and covid-19 delays forced delays until December 2021 and finally, to September 2022.
There are reports that the film will open in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada languages.
The confirmed cast for Brahmastra includes:
“Brahmastra is very inspired by Indian mythology and Indian culture and set in the modern world with modern characters, so in many ways, it is a modern mythology of our own. And in that modern spectrum, Mr. Bachchan plays the role of what Professor Dumbledore is to Harry Potter, or what Gandalf the wizard is to Frodo Baggins — he plays the wise teacher guide, who helps Shiva’s character to actualize his powers and find his destiny.” – Ayan Mukerji, via Variety.
