A highly anticipated 2022 TIFF movie, the upcoming A24 movie The Whale looks emotional, difficult, and culturally significant. Brendan Fraser plays a man named Charlie who is 600 pounds and who has been dealing with a lot of pain. He begins interacting again with his high school daughter, who is played by Stranger Things star Sadie Sink.
Emotional/binge-eating disorder is incredibly important but not discussed as much as anorexia, bulimia and orthorexia, and it definitely deserves to be focused on. Movie fans are eagerly waiting for this movie, which is directed by Darren Aronofsky and is adapted from Samuel D. Hunter's play. A24 doesn't shy away from tough discussions and The Whale is sure to create some interesting and much needed conversations.
There are many great female-led A24 horror movies and the upcoming X prequel Pearl is sure to make a big impression. From the Pearl trailer, horror fans can see how Mia Goth's character gets her start.
While Pearl seems to be a sweet and religious young woman, as she runs a boarding house for soldiers, she dreams of murder, which is definitely not what anyone who knows her expects. Themes of beauty, dreams, and aging are still present in the prequel as they were in the first movie and audiences learn that Pearl wanted to be a famous actress. When her dreams slipped away from her, she decided to begin taking out her frustrations on people in a terrible way. X is so impressive that there are definitely high hopes for the prequel which is sure to be just as special and well-done.
God's Creature is another upcoming A24 film and this one will release in September 2022 as well. Aisling Franciosi, Paul Mescal, and Emily Watson star in the film which is an emotional family drama.
The film has a great setting as a mother and son live in a fishing town and when she tells a massive lie when he is accused of rape, it has a huge affect on them and everyone who they know. Watson, who plays the mother, explained to Deadline.com in an interview, "I think there’s also a very real-world issue in this which is also very particular in Ireland, is that it’s a thing. Mothers give their sons alibis for sexual crimes, and they are believed. And there are actual stories in Ireland of villages or towns where people have been accused of rape and the whole community closes around them and ostracizes the woman, so it’s a very oppressing, real-life thing.”
The Inspection will make a big splash at the 2022 Toronto International FIlm Festival and will premiere for the first time ever. Directed by Elegance Bratton, the movie stars Gabrielle Union, Bokeem Woodbine, Aubrey Joseph, Andrew Kai, Eman Esfandi Nicholas Logan, Aaron Dominguez, McCaul Lombardi, Raul Castillo, and Jeremy Pope.
The story follows Ellis French who becomes a member of the Marine Corps and when he starts a boot camp on a South Carolina island, his sexuality becomes a problem. The subject matter is important and dark.
There is no release date for Sharper, but according to the film's IMDb page, it will be released sometime in 2022. The movie has several big names attached, as John Lithgow, Julianne Moore and Sebastian Stan all have major roles. The description on the film's IMDb page reads "A con artist takes on Manhattan's billionaires." Benjamin Caron directed the film.
There are many great TV shows on AppleTV and the A24 film Sharper will be available on the streaming service. Deadline.com reported on the casting of Moore and Stan in July 2021 and it will be great to see Stan in a new role since the actor impressed horror fans with the unique horror movie Fresh earlier this year.
