Multinational mobile telecommunications company, MTN has officially launched its 5G network, known as the fifth-generation technology, in Nigeria.
The company first launched the 5G in Lagos with plans to roll out the service in Abuja, Kano, Owerri, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, and Maiduguri later in the year.
MTN also disclosed plans to have a nationwide 5G coverage by 2025. However, the telecommunications giant said the rollout would be done in batches.
During the launch, guests were allowed to test and use the technology and experience some of the use cases of the new 5G network.
While MTN has now rolled out its 5G network, Mafab Communications Limited, the other telecommunication firm with a 5G license is yet to roll out 5G.
Speaking at the launch, Chief Executive Officer, MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, said, “Every major technological evolution changes the way we live, the way we connect; changes what is possible.
“GSM took phone calls on the road, 2G added texting to our experience (and created a whole new language), 3G brought the internet to our phones, and 4G made video widely available on mobiles.
“5G will change everything. It will allow us to connect, create, collaborate, and compete in ways we cannot imagine yet. Today we will show you a glimpse of the many possibilities 5G has in store. What is most important is what you and every Nigerian can create with it.”
Also, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta, while commenting on the launch of the 5G technology, said, “Today, we are celebrating the outcome of the successful auction of the 5G spectrum, we are celebrating the commercial launch of 5G services in the country. This puts the country in the global 5G space and from today many of you will experience the super speed associated with 5G.”

Telecommunication giant, MTN has identified the high cost of 5G mobile phones as a barrier to the adoption of the 5G network in Nigeria.
MTN Chief Marketing Officer, Adia Sowho, stated this yesterday during the unveiling of the smartphone finance initiative with Intelligra.
The initiative will allow many Nigerians to own 5G-enabled smartphones. Some of the available smartphone makers include Samsung, TECNO, Nokia, Infinix, and iTel, among others.
Speaking at the press conference, the chief marketing officer of MTN Nigeria, Adia Sowho said: “Smartphones have become the computer for many Nigerians today. Unfortunately, the high costs of these devices have made them out of reach for many. Factors such as forex fluctuation, chipset shortages, and inflation are continuously driving up the cost of phones.”
She further added that the initiative which started with Intelligra in January 2022 is now domiciled in more than 200 outlets across the country with 20,000 devices alrady financed through the initiative.
She further noted that MTN aims to achieve 1,000 units daily through the initiative as the company plans to onboard more outlets, especially in the North.
This will complement MTN 5G network which the company recently rollout in some selected cities in Nigeria.
Investors King learnt that potential beneficiaries of the initiative can walk into any of the accredited outlets and get a smartphone with zero initial capital deposit while the repayments are made through airtime.
Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer of Intelligra, Mr. Tayo Ogundipe, said smartphone financing is an initiative that is prevalent in many developed countries, enabling people to acquire any device of their choice and pay over time.
He also stated that while they plan to onboard more outlets are underway, some of the outlets which are already part of the deal include Slot, Credit Direct, Omali Agent Network others.

The Federal Executive Council, on Wednesday at its weekly FEC meeting approved MTN’s takeover of the construction of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway at over N202.8bn.
The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola who briefed journalists at the end of the meeting noted that the takeover was granted under the Road Infrastructure Tax Credit Scheme.
According to the Minister, the approval will ensure that MTN completes the dualisation of the 110-kilometre road.
Investors King learnt that the first line of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway is currently under construction by the Federal Government while the other line of the expressway will be constructed by the telecommunication giant.
It will be recalled that in 2019, the Ministry of Works and Housing sought Presidential approval for Executive Order 9 which was otherwise known as ‘Road Infrastructure Tax Credit Scheme’.
This order allows the private sector to invest tax liabilities in advance in infrastructure. Some of the roads which the ministry has constructed through the order include Obajana to Kabba Road, Apapa-Oshodi Road, Oshoki-Ojota Expressway and the Bodo-Bonni expressway in Port Harcourt
Meanwhile, in the 2023 budget proposal, the Federal Government has proposed to spend a total of N300.3 billion of its N20.51 trillion for all activities in the Ministry of Works and Housing.
A breakdown of the Ministry’s budget shows that of the total of N300.3 billion allocated to it, capital projects take a significant sum of N288.4 billion, overhead costs received a proposal of N667.8 million while personnel costs will gulp N11.2 billion.
Investors King understands that the Ministry of Works and Housing is one of the few ministries with the highest capital expenditure.
Some of the roads which have been captured in the ministry’s budget include the expansion of the Abuja-Keffi Dual carriageway and the dualization of the Keffi-Akwanga-Lafia-Makurdi road.
Others include the Construction of Agbor-Sakpoba Road and the rehabilitation of the access road to Apapa/Tincan Island Port in Lagos State.
